The rise of sustainable building materials

Sustainable building materials are named as such when they have a low environmental impact compared to traditional building materials. It means they are sourced sustainably ensuring there is a circular supply chain and are energy efficient in production.

The UK government has an Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030 which lays out 17 Sustainable Development Goals to work towards. These goals include combatting climate change and sustainably using natural resources. Sustainability will be a large focus of their plans across all industries with construction being no exception. This forces a move for construction to become more sustainable as it currently produces approximately 100 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste every year. These materials consist of plastic, metals, glass and concrete. UK Construction Online also reports that 10% of the UK’s carbon emissions are generated by construction activities.

Did you know that landfill receives nearly a quarter of all waste produced in the UK and that plastic makes up a large proportion of this landfill? What if we told you that we have a building block produced from 100% recycled polypropylene which could form part of the sustainable building materials conundrum?

QUICKBLOCK are interlocking blocks that are easily and rapidly constructed to create weatherproof temporary structures, durable animal pens and transportable agri sheds to name just a few of their uses. Their big sustainability factor is not just about the recycled material they’re made from, but the fact that the product is completely re-usable. Not only can your building be easily erected but it can be easily dismantled, flat-packed, stored and reused again the future making it entirely adaptable for various situations. That’s a whole lot better than sending your unwanted building to landfill when it needs to come down.

QUICKBLOCK in general are on a sustainability mission with their Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Vincent, having first hand experience with the product through charitable work with Classrooms for Malawi. Their purpose was to build classrooms for children in East Africa using sustainable building materials and they achieved 220 classrooms built supporting more than 16,000 children into safe learning environments. The sustainability efforts are therefore engrained in the QUICKBLOCK business.

QUICKBLOCK is on a mission to provide a sustainable building solution to solve a variety of problems with their interlocking blocks, reducing waste and contributing to a circular economy benefitting businesses, society, and the environment.

Cement alone accounts for 8% of the world’s CO2 emissions, with QUICKBLOCK offering a cost-effective, tool and labour free sustainable building materials alternative. Already proving the durability factor, QUICKBLOCK has worked on a number of sustainable building projects including event infrastructure, equipment storage, streetscaping and polytunnel planter to name just a few, you can view more of these on our projects page here.
